GUI Design Studio 4.5 Released With Enhanced Data Handling And Scrolling Regions

Monday, February 18th, 2013

New Version 4.5The new 4.5 versions of GUI Design Studio Professional and Express, along with a new Viewer, are now available for download.

NowShowingClip1For users of versions 4.0 to 4.4, this is a free upgrade and the Viewer is, of course, always free. Users of GUI Design Studio version 3 or below can install v4 in parallel and try it out before upgrading.

The Professional edition of version 4.5 contains enhanced data handling features while all editions benefit from some nice little changes to component scrolling regions.

There’s also a number of other small changes and 13 bug fixes.

Enhanced CSV Data Features [Pro only]

Building on from the CSV data features introduced in version 4.4, you can now make even better use of data within your application prototypes.

New Data Editor

Relying on the use of external CSV data file editors was never going to be optimal and was only intended as a short-term solution.

If you’d like to continue using Microsoft Excel, or other application, as your CSV file editor, there’s a Preference option to allow you to do this. Otherwise, the default will be to open up the new, internal editor:

DataEditor2

While this is a simple editor, it has all you need to create and edit data files, including full undo and redo capabilities.

There’s also a nice function to fill a column with unique ID values to allow record (row) identification and relationships between data tables.

Expanded Tables and Data in GUI Design Studio 4.4

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

New Version 4.4The new 4.4 versions of GUI Design Studio Professional and Express, along with a new Viewer, are now available for download.

For users of versions 4.0 to 4.3, this is a free upgrade and the Viewer is, of course, always free. Users of GUI Design Studio version 3 or below can install v4 in parallel and try it out before upgrading.

We had two primary goals for version 4.4:

  1. Introduce new Data functionality based on CSV data table files.
  2. Bring the interactivity of Table elements more into line with other elements.

We’ve also made a few other tweaks and fixed some bugs along the way. While most of these new features are only applicable to the Professional edition (and the Viewer), many of the tweaks and bug fixes also apply to the Express edition.

New CSV Data Features [Pro only]

Data tables are CSV text files containing rows and columns of data. They act like tables within a relational database. The first row contains the name for each field in the table and each subsequent row represents a data record.

The new Data panel provides access to CSV files stored within your project:

The New Data Panel

The Help file has a brand new chapter that describes “How to Use Data Tables” so I won’t go into detail here. We have big plans for extending the capabilities of data tables but there’s still a lot you can do with them now to display data and navigate between data records within your prototypes:

Data Record Navigation

Enhancing the Table Element

Not to be confused with the new data tables feature, here’s a quick Table element example, showing off some of the changes, without the need for any overlay elements:

Fruit Table

Up until now, the Table element has been rather static. You could scroll the content and, through properties, indicate selected rows but you couldn’t interact with it further. Adding interactive features has been a primary request from users.

  • Row Selection [Pro only]: We’ve now added interactive row selection with keyboard navigation and multiple row selections using mouse clicks combined with the Shift and Ctrl keys, just like Lists and Trees.
  • Row Navigation: As with the other controls, you can now make connections from individual Table rows to add actions and other navigational behaviour. Sometimes you want to perform some action regardless of which row is selected. In that case, hold Ctrl down while making the connection to link from all rows as one. This also works for List elements!
  • Column Type: For presentation purposes, you can now select the data type for each column as Text, Image, Icon or Checkbox. These determine how the column data is rendered:
    • Text is text and renders as before.
    • Checkbox columns should have a value of 0 for unchecked, 1 for checked or 2 for unspecified.
    • For Images, the data must be a project-relative path to the image file, including the file extension.
    • Icons specify the name of the icon within the project’s Icons folder.

  • Variable Support [Pro only]: With the new selection capabilities, Tables can now be assigned to a Variable, just like List and Tree elements, with similar sub-variables. Since Tables have multiple columns, a new property lets you select which one contains the significant data to return for selected rows.
  • Data Integration [Pro only]: Tables can be attached to a CSV data table. When the prototype is running, it will take its data from there instead of using design-time data. In future, any changes the prototype makes to the underlying data table will be reflected in the Table element automatically, but that’s for later! Note that List elements also have this new ability.

Animation [Pro only]

This almost went under-the-radar as one of those relatively small features that could make a big difference, especially for all those people that asked for it.

We’ve added native support for animated GIF files. Very useful for loading graphics like this:

Colour Loading Spinner

These will also work as spliced, resizable images and when monochrome mode is engaged.

The second animation feature is the ability to transition integer variables between any two values over a specified time frame. And that includes the possibility of animating the active record of a data table or a conditional content selector, opening up many options for slideshows and other presentations.

Animating A Slideshow

What makes this even more useful is the ability to set onward actions and navigations once an animation has completed, including further, chained animations.

Definitely something to have fun with!

Other Changes

  • Variable support added for icons and images. This works in the same way as Table image and icon columns.
  • Import images command added.
  • Node text colour and italic option added to Trees.
  • Opening folders in Explorer also select files now.
  • System menu crash fixed.
  • Element interaction on top of components fixed.
  • Replace Window fix for nested components.
  • Frame Window elements fixed for monochrome Vista style.
  • Horizontal Scroll Bars fixed for right-to-left mirroring.
  • Table header hit testing fixed for horizontal scrolling.

We hope you enjoy using the new features in GUI Design Studio v4.4. As we get busy on the next release, please let us know how you get on by leaving a comment below, contacting Support through the usual channels, or on the new Forums.

Happy designing!

  2. Validation fixed for documentation generation include options.
  3. List Box item values fixed when running unsaved new designs.

What’s coming up in version 4.4?

We’ve got a pretty full road map of changes ahead but the focus for version 4.4 is better handling of data since this is at the heart of most applications.

Not only will you be able to view and manipulate data records in your prototypes, we’re going to make it easier to prototype custom data displays with repeating elements.

Rather than wait for all the functionality, version 4.4 will be rolled out in a number of incremental updates. Check this blog for details as they become available.

GUI Design Studio 4.3 Released

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

New Version 4.3As time flies by, it’s been quite a while since we released a new version of GUI Design Studio. We’ve had our heads down, ripping out the core and replacing it with something a little more shiny.

Even with an abstraction layer already in place, changing the graphics engine threw up some unexpected and subtle problems (otherwise known as bugs and strange visual artefacts) that had to be dealt with, delaying the new release.

But GUI Design Studio version 4.3 is finally here, in both Professional and Express editions, along with a new Viewer. All can be downloaded from here on our web site.

For users of versions 4.0 to 4.2, this is a free upgrade and the Viewer is, of course, always free.

What’s new in version 4.3

1. Fresher App

The application has been given a make-over with fresher icons, neater rendering and anti-aliasing of certain graphics elements.

2. Workspace Background Options

A new preference option has been added to set a background to the design workspace from a number of presets that include a flat colour or tiled image overlaid with optional horizontal lines, vertical lines and dots. The “Orange Grid” preset is shown above.

3. Sketch Visual Style

A new “Sketch” visual style option that is supported by most of the elements. Like all visual styles, it works with any colour scheme and default font. Here’s a sample in “Vista Graphite” colours and “Elemental SF Black/1.0″ font:

GUI Design Studio 4.2.116.0 Released

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Every once in a while, adding one seemingly innocuous little feature to an application turns out to throw a spanner in the works and cause all sorts of havoc.

And so it was that the little “bubbled events” feature that allowed Icons to have their own navigation events, while still allowing navigations from Buttons they might be placed on, introduced a series of bugs that has resulted in a steady stream of 4.2 updates.

But now we’ve finally got it sorted and with the new version 4.2.116.0 release today, we’ve dug deep and fixed as many bugs as we could find. Some of these are minor but others might make a significant difference to the software’s operation.

We’ve also taken the opportunity to introduce an update manager so that you can be notified of new versions you are entitled to and install them much more easily.

If you’re using either the Professional or Express edition of GUI Design Studio version 4 then we recommend you download version 4.2.116.0 and install it over your current version.

Here’s what’s changed in this new version…

New Additions:

  1. Automatic updates management added. A new Preferences option determines how often a check for updates is performed on start-up (Never/Daily/Weekly/Monthly). Checks can also be made at any time using the new “Help | Check for Updates” menu command. If there’s an update available then you’ll be given the option of downloading and installing it automatically.
  2. Auto save facility added. No one likes to lose work and we try hard to ensure that our software doesn’t crash but the occasional crash bug does occur, sometimes associated with obscure scenarios that are hard to test for.

To guard against power outages and crash bugs, modified files are now archived approximately every 2 minutes once the application is idle for a few seconds. The ‘saved’ copies of files on disk are not touched until you issue a “Save” command so the auto-save should have no impact on the way you work and should generally go unnoticed.

In the event of an unexpected exit, when the project is next opened, you will be prompted to recover modified files from the last auto save. You will hopefully never need to use this feature but it’s been added for peace of mind.

Bugs Fixed:

  1. Using the “Send to Back” command on nested elements could cause a crash under certain circumstances such as when they had been copied and pasted into a new design. This has now been fixed.
  2. Using “Undo” and “Redo” commands on “Add Element” and “Delete Element” operations with certain selection states active (too complex to describe fully) could cause a crash. This has now been fixed.
  3. Issues with navigation from icons within components fixed. This affected the Quick Start Tutorial Part 2, Step 1.1 where the navigation originally could only be made from the underlying Toolbar Button but can now also be made from the Icon placed on top. This bug was introduced in 4.2.115.0 while fixing another related bug. The whole bubbling of events to parent items has now been revised to fix these bugs and should work much better with overlaid icons and any other element forming part of a custom control.
  4. The cause of the CPU activity when idle has finally been tracked down and eliminated.
  5. The “View | Canvas” option no longer gets into an inverted state regarding the red canvas border. The canvas itself was okay but was very feint and has now been made darker (similar to its original colour).
  6. The “Paste from Clipboard” feature of the Table element now accepts Unicode characters for languages that cannot be represented by ANSI characters.
  7. The bounding box of grouped elements no longer includes elements that have been deleted.
  8. Using the keyboard to resize elements (Shift + Arrow Keys) now makes use of the Resize Anchors to move and resize child elements appropriately.
  9. Spinner and Scroll Bar elements are now easier to move in the Professional edition. Now the button areas of Spinners and the paging area of Scroll Bars only operate when running the prototype.
  10. Table elements with variable height, word-wrapped cell text now have better working scroll bars.
  11. When making connections, existing connection lines no longer get in the way to prevent you from hitting your target.
  12. Changing the Visual Style or Colour Scheme in the Preferences or Project Options now provides a real-time preview update in the Elements panel again, as it used to do.
  13. Minor text clipping on Ribbon Bar Icon Button (Small) element when zoomed in now fixed.

As always, many thanks to everyone that has reported these bugs and made suggestions for improvement.

Now that we’re completely happy with the version 4.2 functionality, we can move forward with version 4.3 developments, and we’ve got some exciting new features waiting in the wings.
